1 John 1:8-10
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
You have one enemy and his name is Satan. He has one mighty weapon against you, it is to deceive you or to get you to believe something that is not true about yourself, about God or about someone else. Let this passage be a reminder to you of a few things today.
- You have sin. To think that you do not is to deceive yourself. This deception will create a divide between you and God, between you and those around you and create an inner conflict in your spirit.
- God is faithful and just to forgive you AND to cleanse you. To be forgiven is astounding. To be forgiven is to take the injury that you have caused and not seek payment for that injury. To be cleansed is even more impressive. Your sin leaves a residue that remains and blocks you from joy, hope, peace and many other good things that God intends to give you.
- Many times our enemy (Satan the deceiver) tries to convince us that our sin is too great to be forgiven or cleansed or he tries to convince us that our sin is not that big of deal and does not need to be dealt with.
- We need to confess our sin. Talk to God today. Ask him to remind you of your sin and ask him to forgive and cleanse you. Take a few minutes several times today. Perhaps lunch, as you go to sleep tonight, or as you drive to work or school. Be active in your sin confession.
