Day 2 | Reading the Bible (40,000 Feet)
“Open my eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” (Ps. 119:18)
Today we want you to engage in reading an entire book of the Bible. I recommend reading one of Paul’s short Epistles. Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians or Colossians are great books to read. If you want something in the Old Testament Read Esther or Jonah. If you have a lot of time to read today, try one of the gospels or Paul’s letter to the Romans or in the Old Testament, read a history book like Genesis, Exodus, 1 or 2 Samuel, 1 or 2 Kings or 1 or 2 Chronicles. It is also a good idea to read a big chunk of the Psalms or Proverbs.
The point of this Bible reading as a discipline is to get large, over arching themes of the truth of scripture into our heads. When we read large chunks of scripture, we begin to see themes. The Bible becomes a puzzle that begins to fit together. We see arguments that the author is crafting and we see larger truths come out.
Most of the time, when we read the Bible, it is for the sake of study and many times we land on one or two verses or maybe even just a phrase. Those are good things, but reading large chunks of scripture is really valuable. Take some time today to read the Bible. Try to read for 20-30 minutes. As you do, ask God to illuminate his Word for you. Be careful not to get hung up if you do not understand or want to study something more in depth. You can come back to those areas later…keep reading.
Remember, God is the goal.
Read an entire book of the Bible. If you have no clue where to start, then read the Book of Colossians. Otherwise choose one from the list above.
