Day 7 | Intro to Prayer
Welcome to week 2 on our 40 day journey. The purpose of this journey is to position ourselves under the waterfall of God’s grace by actively engaging in six spiritual disciplines. This week is all about prayer. Watch this video of Dave introducing this transformational discipline.
Today, during our worship gathering at North Church, we will be looking at a parable from Luke 18. This parable reveals to us God’s desire to transform our evil tendencies.
Luke 18:9-14 (ESV)
9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
While there are so many things we could focus on in this parable, the lesson is simply beckoning us to a life of humility. This foundational calling to a humble life not only delights the heart of God but also gives us the ability to change. When we approach God with a humble posture, we move from our natural tendency to simply conform to religious practices like prayer to allowing God’s supernatural power to transform our hearts. This is foundational when it comes to the discipline of prayer. We would love for you to join us at 10am if you are able to, otherwise you can listen to the sermon once it’s posted to our podcast.
Spend some time now preparing your heart for this week. Listen to this song by Rend Collective called “Boldly I Approach.” As you consider what it means to be a person who lives moment by moment in the presence of your Savior, make this song your prayer! God longs to transform you in this journey, so humble your heart now and allow him to do so. Then, go to him with boldness, knowing that complete access is granted, not by your own perfection, but only through the perfecting work of Jesus.
