Day 9 | Prayers of Adoration
Adoration = “An attitude of worship characterized by love and reverence towards God.”
C.S. Lewis said, “ ‘Gratitude exclaims, very properly: ‘How good of God to give me this.’ Adoration says: ‘What must be the quality of that Being whose far-off and momentary coruscations are like this! One’s mind runs back up the sunbeam to the sun.”
The first time I (Rik) read this quote, I had to look up the word coruscations. It simply means sudden and brilliant flashes of light.
I love German chocolate cake. The Cup is a cupcake place that my wife and I love and during January they sell German chocolate cupcakes. They actually held it over to Monday, February 1, this year. On that day last week, my wife went out of her way to go by and get me two cupcakes, one for that night and one for later. Those cupcakes were great.
But do you know what was even better? The fact that she knew it was the last day that I would get for a whole year to get one and she went out of her way to get me two. She did that because she loves me. As I ate those cupcakes, I thought about the Lewis quote. What must be the character of this woman to do this for me? This is what Lewis meant in his quote.
Today, we want you to think about the gifts in your life. Think about the people that you love or the people that love you. Understand that love was created by God, he invented it and put a craving for it in you. He loved you before you ever loved anyone or knew what love is. What must the character of such a being be to give a gift like love? Watch the sunset tonight. Tickle your kids today. Listen to a really good song. Eat a really good meal. Think back last week to a time when God was really present to you through Bible intake. As you do these things, don’t simply thank him for those gifts, but adore him for being the kind of being that would create such wonderful pleasures.
Here are some scriptures to help you adore God in prayer today:
Psalm 84:1–2 (ESV)
1How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! 2My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.
Psalm 29:2 (ESV)
2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.
Psalm 33:8 (ESV)
8 Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him!
Revelation 4:11 (ESV)
11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
Have a great day adoring your God!
