Day 11 | Prayers of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving = “A natural expression of thanks in response to blessings, protection, or love. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, gratitude is not a tool used to manipulate the will of God. It is never coerced or fabricated in one’s mind; rather, gratitude is a joyful commitment of one’s personality to God.”
Sometimes the best prayers are the simplest prayers. We want to highlight this idea today as we pray prayers of thanksgiving. If you have kids or have ever been around young kids when they pray, there’s a ton to learn from them on this point. Kid’s prayers typically go something like this…
“God thank you for mommy and daddy and my bike and my bear and my jammy suit. Thank you for cookies and snow and water and Aunt Melissa and Uncle Dan. Thank you for my bed and pillow and my house and all my toys. A….men.”
Typically, kids go on and on with things they are thankful for. And when we hear these kind of prayers, we think to ourselves, “how cute.” But let’s be clear, these are not immature prayers. They are exactly what Jesus means when he says, “Unless you become like a little child you cannot enter the kingdom of Heaven” (Matt. 18:3). Today, let’s take these perceived childish prayers and humble our hearts to learn from them and pray like them.
Think of five things that you are thankful for and tell God you are thankful for them. Ask him to give you a thankful spirit today.
Also, at some point today think of five people that you are thankful for and tell God you are thankful for them. You can also shoot that person a text to tell them as well. The goal of today is to create a thankful spirit in us.
Here are some scriptures you can use to think on and pray prayers of thanksgiving:
Psalm 107:8–9 (ESV)
8 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! 9 For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
Psalm 50:14 (ESV)
14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High,
Psalm 69:30 (ESV)
30 I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify him with thanksgiving.
Psalm 100:4–5 (ESV)
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! 5 For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
Become like a little child and have a great and thankful day today.
