Day 13 | Praying God’s Word
Language is spoken into us; we learn language only as we are spoken to. We are plunged at birth into a sea of language…Then slowly syllable by syllable we acquire the capacity to answer, “mama,” “papa,” “blanket,” “yes,” “no.” None of these words were a first word…all speech is answering speech. We were all spoken to before we spoke. (Eugene Peterson)
In his book Prayer, Tim Keller writes, “If the goal of prayer is a real, personal connection with God then it is only by immersion in the language of the Bible that we will learn to pray, perhaps just as slowly as a child learns to speak.”
Today, let’s circle back to Psalm 130. It is a Psalm that we spent some time with during the Bible Intake week. Read that Psalm again and focus on a simple phrase, maybe the one you put in your smart phone last week. Make that your simple prayer. Say that phrase to God. Maybe change it up, restate it in your own words. Ask God to remind you of the truth of that phrase and to help you focus on it today. If you’ve been reading a different portion of scripture, then take those Truths and turn them into prayers today.
Remember, the goal of these 40 days is to apprehend God. This is a great way to do that. Have a good day and be sure to stick with us on this 40 day journey as tomorrow we transition to the discipline of evangelism.
Psalm 130:1–8 (ESV)
1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord! 2 O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy! 3 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. 5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; 6 my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. 7 O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption. 8 And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
