Day 32 | Fasting with our ears & mouth
A bishop in ancient Rome named John Chrysostom wrote this about fasting:
“Let the ear fast as well. The fasting of the ear consists in refusing to pay attention to evil gossip and slander. Let the mouth, too, fast from disgraceful speech and criticisms.”
As you fast today, think about these things. Consider Ephesians 4:29:
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
Chrysostom also said that while fasting we should, “exert ourselves in every way possible.” So today as you fast, keep this idea in mind. Understand also that the act of fasting is not the goal. God is the goal. He is the worthy prize. Let us exert ourselves in our attempt to apprehend Him.
