Day 33 | The Difficulty of Fasting
Yesterday we read the quote from John Chrysostom in regard to fasting. He said:
(When we fast we should) “Exert ourselves in every way possible.”
I want to think about this word “exert.”
During these 33 days of spiritual disciplines, we have talked about Bible Intake, Prayer, Evangelism, Repentance and Fasting. As I read Chrysostom’s quote, I was taken by the word exert, especially in light of the concept of fasting and spiritual disciplines. When I think about the word “exert,” I think about “exerting energy.” I think of working hard for something. I think of expending effort.
Spiritual disciplines are like that. We need to work at them. We need to expend energy on them. We need to expend effort on them. Spiritual disciplines are not easy. They do not require little of us. They require much of us. We need to give ourselves to them. This is especially true of fasting.
As you fast this week, understand that it is hard. But understand that it is for the really good purpose of apprehending God.
