Day 36 | Serving
In Mark 10:42-45, Jesus is talking to his disciples and he says to them,
42 You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
This section of scripture is both our instruction and our guide for the last week of 40 Days of Transformation. Let’s reset a bit at the start of the week. Serving is a spiritual discipline and the purpose of spiritual disciplines is to connect our hearts with God and enjoy a more pure relationship with God the Father…a pure and undefiled relationship that we were created to live in and is the path to full and complete satisfaction.
If you are a follower of Christ, Jesus has called you to serve. So serving is not just a spiritual discipline, it is an act of obedience. This week we will look closely at this passage in Mark 10 and we will offer ideas and helps to get you serving people.
For today, take a moment to pray and ask God to show you two things.
- Ask Him to show you the heart behind Mark 10:42-45.
- Ask Him to show you HOW to serve and HOW Jesus served.
We will start our week of service with something easy to act on. Serve someone today that is close to you. Maybe a family member or a close friend. Think right now about who that might be and what serving them might look like. Then serve them. Try to make this more than a single act. Serve that person in multiple ways today. Think hard about how they need to be served. Do they have a daily routine that is sometimes a struggle that you could enter into and take a bit of a burden from them? Perhaps you could make a meal and take it to them. Think hard about this and then execute the plan.
As you serve this person, ask God to enlighten your mind to HOW Jesus served. Remember we want to serve people because we love them and because Jesus called us to serve people.
Enjoy your day.
